ANALYSIS |
|
Zaragoza and Villarreal square up to each other
this weekend having both pulled off impressive UEFA
Cup wins in the week to progress to the last 16.
Visitors to La Romareda, Villarreal have had an
impressive start to the year and there has been no
clearer indication of their strength than the way
they knocked out Dynamo Kiev by holding them to a
goalless draw in the Ukraine before following that
with a 2-0 home win.
In the league they are now on the verge of a
Champions League place, standing just one point off
fourth position, and their 3-2 win over Atletico
Madrid last weekend was a key victory over a rival
for a European place.
Villarreal, a team which is largely made up of South
Americans, are arguably playing the best football in
Spain with former Boca Juniors star Juan Roman
Riquelme finally demonstrating in the Primera Liga
why he was held in such high regard in Argentina.
One of the biggest surprises of the season, however,
has been the goalscoring prowess of Diego Forlan
who, in February, has already made himself the
club's top scorer ever in a season with 15 goals.
Forlan is now only two goals behind Samuel Eto'o in
the goalscoring charts, but he is refusing to name a
number he would like to reach for the season.
``I don't like to make specific aims as regards
goals,'' he said. ``I do not think about this as it
is difficult to do and there is still a long way to
go in the season. Eto'o is a great goalscorer and it
will be very difficult to beat him.''
Defender Juan Pablo Sorin has only been at
Villarreal for two months but already he is
exemplifying the winning spirit of the team and
scored a crucial late goal in the 3-2 win over
Atletico.
``The goal that I got was very pleasing for me,
especially with it being my first for the club,'' he
said. ``I celebrated a lot because the strike gave
us the three points. We have the right to dream at
the moment but we still need to keep working at the
same intensity and with the same ambition.
``The club has the ambition to grow and it has
people in charge who are making clear, logical
decisions which I have not seen for a long time.
Villarreal are creating something that can be very
big and I want to be part of it.
``With all our goals this season it is important
that we concentrate on each match as well as
planning ahead and we will move forward little by
little. The important thing remains to win our games
at home and get as many as we can away.''
Zaragoza pulled off home and away wins against
Fenerbahce in the UEFA Cup and will hope to transfer
their European form to the league where they have
lost two of their last three matches.
However, both Alvaro Maior and Agustin Aranzabal are
fitness doubts for coach Victor Munoz after picking
up knocks in Thursday's 2-1 home win.
Vilarreal have scored eleven goals in their last
four away encounters, while Zaragoza have lost two
of of their last four home games. The value is on

OUTCOME |
Stylish Villarreal, whose recent form has been the talk of
Spain, came back to earth with a thud at La Romareda where
they slumped to defeat at the hands of Real Zaragoza.
A goal in the 40th minute by highly-rated striker David
Villa was the difference between the sides, who had both
reached the last 16 of the UEFA Cup in midweek.
The loss could seriously dent Villarreal's hopes of winning
a Champions League spot at the end of the season while the
three points will go a long way to securing Zaragoza's
Primera Liga status for another campaign.
Zaragoza were busy from the kick-off with much-travelled
midfielder Jose Movilla showing great authority as he linked
up regularly with Villa.
But it was Movilla's companion in the middle of the park,
Argentina midfielder Luciano Galletti, who posed the biggest
threat to Villarreal.
Galletti is in great form at the moment and he created the
first opportunity of the match in the eighth minute.
After some fine individual play, he fired in a rasping
left-footed shot, which visiting keeper Jose Manuel Reina
cleared, but with difficulty.
The first half centred on a battle for midfield superiority,
with both teams showing respect towards each other.
The two teams constantly looked to offer protection to their
defences as opposed to going forward, which didn't give much
opportunity for the fans to see the exciting football that
everyone was expecting.
However, the stalemate was finally broken five minutes
before half-time when Villa struck. He took advantage of a
pass from Galletti, got himself into a good position and
then fired in a shot at goal which easily beat Reina.
Villarreal, who have never won at Zaragoza, came out in the
second half looking to play.
The home side were too relaxed and looked like they might
have problems if they continued in that manner.
Midway through the half, Villarreal duo Hector Font and Juan
Pablo Sorin linked well, culminating in a lob that hit the
crossbar.
For once, Villarreal playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme was
disappointing in a losing side, struggling to fashion out
any goalscoring chances for either himself or his
team-mates.
However, the Argentinian ace did have one late opportunity
to get something out of the game for his side when
Villarreal were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous situation
seven minutes from time.
Riquelme, a dead-ball expert, took the kick but he was
unlucky to see his effort hit the bar and fly out of play.
That proved to be the final decent chance of the match for
Villarreal and with Riquelme kept under wraps and
freescoring striker Diego Forlan unable to add to his tally
of 15 goals, the visitors could not prevent a seventh defeat
of the season.
