ANALYSIS |
|
" The cities of Siena and Florence are
two of the most beautiful towns in Italy and have an
historic rivalry that goes back centuries.
However, memories of their glorious past will count
for little in Sunday's Tuscany derby between their
two football clubs whose players will be more
motivated by the fear of what could be an
impoverished future.
Both teams still have a lot of work to do to avoid
relegation to Serie B and that will be uppermost in
their minds as they meet - as they always do - at
the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Both teams have named their ground after Franchi, a
former Tuscany football administrator, but it is
Siena who will play hosts on Sunday. The home side's
plight is more desperate than that of their visitors
as they are second bottom of Serie A with only
Atalanta below them in the standings.
Michele Mignani is in his ninth season at Siena, who
last season played in the top flight for the first
time in their 100-year history. With Siena's plight
worse than that of the visitors from Florence,
Mignani is all too aware that even a draw would be
an unsatisfactory outcome for the Bianconeri.
He said: ``We must get the maximum result to take
full advantage of this and capitalise on the draws
we have had in recent matches.''
The draws have been frustrating for Siena who have
thrown away several winning positions since Luigi De
Canio succeeded the sacked Luigi Simoni as coach.
They have drawn their last six matches and in three
of the last four they have conceded leads, two of
which were two-goal leads.
With first-choice goalkeeper Alex Manninger a
long-term injury casualty, De Canio will be hoping
Marco Fortin has recovered from flu by Sunday. If
not, Adriano Zancope will get the nod.
Francesco Cozza is once more available for selection
while Massimo Maccarone has been following a special
training programme following his own injury
problems. Daniele Portanova is suspended after being
sent off in the 2-2 draw with Messina. Fiorentina
are not in the relegation zone but far too close for
comfort.
At least they picked up their first win under new
coach Dino Zoff last time out, beating Parma 2-1.
The Tuscan derby sees both Siena and Fiorentina
involved in the relegation battle. Derbies are
always difficult to predict and this will be no
exception. The
Bianconeri and Viola must not lose in order to
stay in touch with all other relegation contenders;
therefore a draw seems the most obvious choice.
However a win can be achieved by either side as
Siena have been playing extremely well in recent
weeks, grabbing only draws but no wins due to some
unlucky situations, while Fiorentina will have
Bojinov back in the first team.

OUTCOME |
Tore Andre Flo's early goal proved enough as ten-man Siena
win the Tuscan derby and send Fiorentina plummeting into the
thick of the relegation struggle.
This match was not only a relegation dogfight, but also a
fiery Tuscan derby at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Luigi De
Canio had drawn every single game since taking charge of the
Bianconeri, while Dino Zoff finally celebrated his first
Fiorentina victory last week after four straight losses.
Valeri Bojinov and Daniele Delli Carri returned from
suspension, while Enzo Maresca was fit after a long-term
injury. All eyes were on former Viola hero Enrico Chiesa,
now plying his trade at Siena.
Tore Andre Flo opened the scoring for Siena after just six
minutes, as he rose to nod in a Bruno Cirillo cross from the
right.
The home side was dominating early on and Cristiano
Lupatelli did well to rush off his line and pluck the ball
off Simone Vergassola's foot following a great pass from
Roberto D'Aversa. The move continued and D'Aversa fired wide
of the open goal.
There was controversy just before the break, as Giovanni
Pasquale was shown a straight red card for lashing out at
Luca Ariatti. The incident did not seem particularly
serious, but it is ex-Inter man Pasquale's second dismissal
since joining the club in January and left Siena in 10 men
for an hour.
Fiorentina thought they had equalised on the stroke of
half-time when Fabrizio Miccoli's free kick was deflected up
for Bojinov to nod in, but the goal was correctly disallowed
for offside.
There was more bad news for Siena in stoppages, as Flo
clashed heads with teammate D'Aversa and required several
minutes of medical assistance for a cut lip.
The disappointing Hidetoshi Nakata made way for Martin
Jorgensen after the break, while £10m signing Bojinov was
replaced by Giampaolo Pazzini.
The Under-21 international seemed to be a better partner for
Miccoli and he ran on to the ex-Juve man's pass to bring a
tough save out of Alex Manninger.
Chiesa fired just wide of the target with a snapshot, but
Fiorentina were taking the initiative now and Vergassola's
clearance proved decisive on a dangerous Miccoli corner
kick.
Lupatelli was also called to stop ten-man Siena doubling
their lead on a fine shot from Vergassola.
Manninger did well to prevent Miccoli scoring after
Colonnese slipped, but the Italian should perhaps have
rolled his pass across to the unmarked Pazzini rather than
going for glory.
The former Arsenal and Fiorentina goalkeeper then flew to
palm a Pazzini header out of the bottom corner as the Viola
poured on the pressure in the last ten minutes.
Giorgio Chiellini sprung the offside trap on a free kick and
thumped the outside of the near post, but the move didn't
count as Rigano was behind the defenders.
A goal was disallowed for offside as Delli Carri was
interfering with play when Christian Rigano turned the ball
back into the centre
