ANALYSIS |
|
" The introduction of new coach Nando
Yosu last week failed to make a difference for
Racing Santander as they slumped to defeat against
Real Sociedad at the Sardinero.
The Racing board decided it was time to act ahead of
the game against Real with the team slipping into
the relegation zone and decided to axe coach Lucas
Alcaraz before promoting Yosu from the backroom
staff.
However, a 3-1 defeat left them deeper in trouble
lying second from bottom of the table as Mallorca's
victory over Albacete meant Hector Cuper's men leap-frogged
Santander on goal-difference.The strugglers now face
another tough test at home to Valencia, a clash
which is set to be a big occasion for both Pedro
Lopez and Libero Parri who are both on-loan from the
Mestalla.
"There are still 15 matches to go and we are fully
focused on performing better and moving up the
table," said Lopez. In any case the worst thing that
we can do is become nervous, we have to be more
united than ever and support the new coaching
staff."
Parri agreed, saying: "At this stage we need to
retain our belief in ourselves and work together.
"If we do this then we are more than capable of
surviving this season. I have to think of the game
against Valencia as no different to any other, there
is no room for sentimentality at the moment as we
are fighting for our lives."
Valencia midfielder Ruben Baraja believes that the
Sardinero will be the ideal place for the team to
get back to winning ways after last week's home
defeat to Deportivo la Coruna increased the pressure
on coach Claudio Ranieri.
"Racing Santander are up to their necks in it at the
moment and we will have to play to our potential to
get the victory," he said.
"It is the perfect opportunity for us to get
ourselves back on track. Ranieri is in the same boat
as the rest of us, nobody here is thinking whether
he will stay or not and the football he is
delivering is good."
Ranieri is set to retain Pablo Aimar after finding a
place for him in the side which beat Steaua
Bucharest in the Uefa Cup.
Racing have an abysmal home record, they have
only won once in their last four home games.
Valencia will be trying to get things back on track
and should be too strong today. They have no
problems scoring away from home, and have averaged
two goals a game in their last three games. Valencia
is the call!

OUTCOME |
The pressure on Valencia coach Claudio Ranieri mounted
further with a humiliating defeat at the hands of
relegation-haunted Racing on Sunday.
In desperate need of a win, the defending Primera Liga
champions did not have the guile or invention to overturn
Mario Regueiro's 52nd minute goal.
As the rain beat down in the Sardinero stadium, Ranieri must
have wished it could have washed away the problems which
have built up as the results have slipped.
A 2-0 midweek UEFA Cup victory over Steaua Bucharest was the
minimum requirement for the holders, coming on the back of a
sorry home loss to another fallen power, Deportivo La Coruna,
last weekend.
The defeat has left them a mammoth 19 points behind leaders
Barcelona and they have not won in La Liga since January 8,
seven games ago.
But for Racing, only their second win in 14 games was a
considerable coup and moved them out of the bottom three.
The visitors began the brighter, employing a pressing game
high up the pitch as they probed for openings.
Argentinian playmaker Pablo Aimar, who has been in and out
of Ranieri's line-ups this season, was lively in the opening
stages and a jinking run came to an end when he tried to use
one stepover too many.
But the weather was not helping the game and by the half
hour stage there had been no clear cut opportunities.
Javi Guerrero thumped a powerful drive from the edge of the
area which flew wildly over Andres Palop's crossbar and five
minutes later Guerrero was booked for diving in the penalty
area.
Trying the same trick a minute later to a cacophony of boos,
he was fortunate that the referee did not produce a second
yellow card.
But his histrionics were a rare standout point of a low
quality first half that was lacking in goalmouth action
until Marco Di Vaio had a terrific chance to give Valencia
the lead.
Latching onto Aimar's perceptive pass, the Italian striker
raced away from the Racing backline and slid his shot beyond
on-rushing keeper Dudu Aouate but also the post.
Di Vaio went close two minutes into the second half as he
powerfully headed wide from an Aimar free-kick but four
minutes later Racing grabbed a lead they would not lose.
Awarded a free-kick five yards outside the area, Regueiro
stepped up and slotted it past Palop.
Valencia striker Miguel Mista, who had been anonymous,
flicked the outside of the home post with a stinging drive
in the 52nd minute and shortly after he should have done
better than fire straight into the goalkeeper's midriff
following a good ball from Di Vaio.
Racing then hit back when Jose Moraton met a floated corner
with a shot that Palop did well to acrobatically block.
As the conditions deteriorated, so did the pitch, making a
game which was not much of a spectacle to begin with even
worse.
Perhaps understandably, the game suffered from too many long
balls and by the end Valencia were unable to find any way
past a stubborn Racing defence.
Valencia president Juan Bautista Soler said that he would
not discuss Ranieri's future until the end of the season.
Further results of this nature and his hand could be forced
long before May.
