ANALYSIS |
|
" New coach Nando Yosu is confident
that he can help Racing Santander pick up enough points
to avoid relegation, starting with the visit of Real
Sociedad.
Defeat last weekend to Villarreal was the final straw
for the club who took the decision to sack Lucas Alcaraz
with the team dropping into the bottom three. Alcaraz
walked away from the job claiming that he was happy
with the work he had done.
"I am quite calm although I would have liked
to have had the chance to finish the season. I know
that I have performed my task well," said Alcaraz.
I am not going into the details of what the president
(Manuel Huerta) said to me but all I can ask for is
that people support the team and the new coaching
staff so that all the effort can be concentrated on
what faces the team now. I hope that the errors that
the team has committed can be solved by the new coach.
Now I will spend my time watching football and I will
look for something new in the spring." The new
coaching regime at Racing will see Yosu in charge
of the first team, Raul Ruiz as his assistant, Manolo
Preciado as the sports director and Luis Felipe Lucio
as the fitness trainer. Yosu was a member of the backroom
staff and has three times in the past taken over as
a stop-gap, the last time before Alcaraz came in.Racing
will face Real without Walid Regragui who is suspended
after being sent-off against Villarreal.
Real are themselves in relegation danger just two
points above Racing but they are set to have defender
Luiz Alberto available after he recovered from a knock
to his knee.
"I believe that I will be ready for Sunday,"
said the Brazilian, who feels that Real were on the
right tracks in the draw against Valencia last weekend.
We could have won or lost the match but I think that
we can generally be happy with the way we are playing.
We have to now win the game against Racing, we have
to be strong and continue to work in the line we set
against Valencia." Santander have a great scoring
record at home recently, and i think they can outscore
Sociedad today. Santander have scored eight goals
in their last four at home, while Sociedad have lost
their last three away trips. im on Santander to just
edge it today.

OUTCOME |
Real Sociedad temporarily eased their relegation fears and
plunged Racing Santander deeper into trouble after Turkish
striker Nihat Kahveci bagged a first-half brace to get new
Racing boss Nando Yosu's regime off to a terrible start.
Previous coach Lucas Alcaraz was fired on Wednesday after a
run of just one win in the last 12 games but the new man at
the Racing helm fared little better as the visitors wrapped
up their first win in seven games by half-time at the
Sardinero.
Sociedad took the lead as early as the eighth minute through
a questionable goal from Mikel Aranburu.
The midfielder picked the ball up from a free-kick and
buried a shot past Dudu Aouate in the Racing goal, although
there was some doubt as to whether it should have stood as
Darko Kovacevic was in an offside position.
Two minutes later, Sociedad doubled their lead. Aranburu fed
Nihat, who controlled the ball in the penalty area before
unleashing a fierce drive past the despairing Aoute to
celebrate his 50th goal for the club in only 100 games.
Racing sought an immediate reply as the game was quickly
slipping away from them and Javier Guerrero forced Asier
Riesgo into a first save of the match after picking up a
pass from Yossi Benayoun.
Sociedad then nearly made it three just four minutes later
as Valery Karpin found Xavi Prieto on the edge of the area
and the midfielder fizzed a shot inches wide of the mark.
However, Jose Amorrortu's side did kill the game off 10
minutes before half-time with Nihat's second and Sociedad's
third.
After some tenacious work by Prieto, the midfielder slipped
the ball to the prolific Turkish forward who made no mistake
with his left foot when presented with an open goal to give
his side a 3-0 lead at half-time.
A more determined Racing outfit came out for the second-half
and within 12 minutes they had pulled a goal back.
Fernando Moran's corner caused Riesgo to venture too far
from his line in order to claim the ball, allowing Anderson
Silva to glance a header past the onrushing Sociedad
custodian.
Riesgo atoned for his error after 65 minutes when he did
well to keep out Mario Reguiero's left-footed strike before
Jonathan Valle had the ball in the back of the visitors'
net, only for his goal to be disallowed for offside.
Santander had the better of the second half as Sociedad were
content to sit on their lead and Riesgo had to produce
another great save to keep Rugerio from halving the deficit
eight minutes from time.
The home side were unlucky not to pull another goal back
after 87 minutes. Moran's pass was collected by Javi Guerreo
and the striker beat Riesgo from inside the box, only to see
his effort come back off the post.
The result leaves Santander second from bottom after Real
Mallorca beat Albacete and with defending champions Valencia
visiting the Sardinero next week, things could get worse
before they get better for Yosu.
