" The race for the Scudetto is back
in the melting pot after AC Milan's terrific comeback
against Lazio, coupled with Juventus' surprise defeat
at Palermo, cut the gap at the top of Serie A to just
two points. Two defeats in a row has seen the Bianconeri
relinquish what had looked like becoming an unassailable
lead at the summit at a time when a seemingly bedraggled
Milan have recaptured their form.
The Andriy Shevchenko-inspired 2-1 win over the Biancoceleste
came a week after Messina had been torn apart 4-1
by Carlo Ancelotti's side. Self-doubt seems to have
crept into the Juve squad, who have failed to score
in the last two games, just when cool heads were needed.
The Rossoneri certainly have the momentum as the
business end of the campaign looms. But that has not
stopped the teams' critics coming to the surface.
Jaap Stam, who gave away a soft penalty against Lazio
while playing in an unfamiliar right-back position,
has bore the brunt of the abuse. The former Holland
international's recent performances have come under
the microscope - but Stam, who has had his injury
problems this season, feels the stick attributed to
him is unfair.Stam recognises how hard it will be
for Milan to retain their Scudetto crown - but he
feels the squad have the ability to do it.
"We are the champions and everyone wants to
beat us. But we want to win every game until the end
of the season."
Milan, who enjoy good relations with Sunday's opponents
Reggina, will be without Andrea Pirlo for the trip.
The cultured defensive midfielder picked up a leg
injury during Italy's friendly with Russia on Wednesday
and is receiving treatment for the problem.
Shevchenko should earn a recall to Ancelotti's starting
XI following his match-turning substitute's performance
against Lazio although fellow striker Filippo Inzaghi
is still not fully match-fit. Reggina, undefeated
in seven, are in the middle of a fine run of form
and have made a habit of upsetting the odds against
the Serie A pacesetters. They were the first side
to defeat Juventus this season, and they held unbeaten
Internazionale to a draw last month. They have enjoyed
some luck on the injury front in recent weeks and
could go into the tussle unchanged from the side that
drew 3-3 against Siena last weekend. Despite the recent
two consecutive wins, for Milan this match might be
something of a banana skin as the Amaranti have been
doing quite well recently. At home Reggina also defeated
Juventus and held Inter to a goalless draw so it should
come to no surprise if they do manage to hold the
Rossoneri as well - At odds of 9/2 for a home win
I'm going for another shock today.
Recommendation: Reggina
