ANALYSIS |
Highly-rated Parma goalkeeper Sebastien Frey will be
on his way in the summer as the debt-ridden club
battles to avoid the drop to Serie B.
The Gialloblu are just one point above the
relegation zone but Frey, despite having a contract
until 2007, will be leaving regardless of where the
club finishes this season.
Having been linked with a move to the Premiership in
the past, the Frenchman could once again be tipped
for the number one jersey at Arsenal or Manchester
United, both of which are expected to be up for
grabs come the season's end.
``This year I have made sacrifices because we all
know in what condition Parma is in,'' admitted the
24-year-old.I am happy here and I have a contract
for a further two years but I cannot deny that I
want to have an important experience elsewhere.''
That could even be a return to Internazionale, where
current keeper Francesco Toldo has been less than
impressive on a number of occasions.
He continued: ``I still have a house in Como and my
wife and the rest of her family are Internazionale
fans. The English idea is interesting because
Manchester United are a great club but in these past
few years I have become a fan of Italian football. I
have already played at Inter but I was young and
immature then and it would be wonderful to return.''
For the time being, Frey is concentrating on the
league, where Parma have 11 games to save
themselves.
``I want to help Parma to remain in Serie A,'' he
said. ``I owe it to my team-mates and to the club.
Each game is going to be a battle and we have to be
ready, starting on Sunday.''
Parma's weekend visitors, Cagliari, know that they
face a real challenge, not only as they are playing
a team in desperate need of points but also because
of their pitiful away form.
Daniele Arrigoni's 10th-placed men may be a force on
Sardinian soil, where only AC Milan have beaten
them, but they have taken just six points out of a
possible 39 on the road.
And no one among them will be taking Parma's
position lightly.
``We will have to be extremely careful,'' said
midfielder Alessandro Budel, a former Parma
player. They are well organised and they are
dangerous in attack but we will be more calm than
they will and this could benefit us.''
Parma coach Pietro Carmignani is set to play with
the same team that lost 2-1 at Lazio last weekend,
with the exception of defender Giuseppe Cardone
returning to the starting line-up.
Cagliari travel to the Tardini stadium without the
suspended midfield trio of Nelson Abeijon,
Alessandro Agostini and Daniele Conti.
The Gialloblu have shown good signs of recovery
in recent weeks despite not winning many points
especially away from home. On Sunday they will host
Cagliari, with the Rossoblu’s away form being
disastrous when compared to their home record. For
Carmignani’s side this is a great chance to win all
three points and continue on their quest of avoiding
relegation.

OUTCOME |
Fabio Simplicio's absolute stunner sealed a thrilling
encounter at the Stadio Tardini as ten-man Parma grabbed the
points.
Parma's fight against the drop continued against travel-sick
Cagliari, who had just one point from their last six away
games and had to do without the suspended Agostini, Daniele
Conti and Nelson Abeijon. Gianfranco Zola returned to the
stadium that was his home for many years and was presented
with a memento by the Parma faithful before kick-off.
The Gialloblu had a great chance to open the scoring after
less than 60 seconds. Alberto Gilardino held up the ball for
Domenico Morfeo and his low drive was turned round the post
by the quick reactions of Gennaro Iezzo.
However, it was Cagliari who broke through moments later in
bizarre circumstances. Gianfranco Zola's chipped pass was
going towards Mauro Esposito, but in a bid to anticipate the
striker, Daniele Bonera accidentally nodded the ball into
his own net.
Gilardino drew Parma level soon after with a truly special
goal. The Italian international spun round and placed his
shot past Iezzo when surrounded by Cagliari shirts.
The former Piacenza man was on stunning form and duetted
with Morfeo before Iezzo stuck out a hand to parry his
effort.
It was an extremely entertaining game and on 17 minutes
Parma completed their comeback to take the lead. Gilardino
touched on a corner kick for Cesare Bovo's diving header at
the back post.
The Gialloblu are fighting relegation, but Morfeo nearly
scored the goal of the decade. On the half-hour mark he
gathered the ball with his back to goal from six yards,
flicked it into the air and backwards with his heel only to
see this most audacious of efforts thump the post. It was a
magical moment of football at the Stadio Tardini.
There was panic in the Cagliari area straight after the
restart, as Paolo Cannavaro's deflected header from a corner
kick thumped the crossbar and Delnevo was quick to clear the
danger.
The Sardinians fought back and Sebastien Frey punched out a
Maltagliati header, but the goalkeeper saw red for a last
man foul on substitute David Suazo just outside the penalty
area, leaving Parma in ten men for the last 25 minutes.
They were under pressure, but still got another chance in
with Bovo's effort turned out for a corner.
Parma have an unfortunate habit of conceding goals at the
death and they did it again. Suazo was the key once more, as
he was left unmarked to fire in after fellow substitute
Rolando Bianchi held up the ball.
Deep into stoppages Parma sent the Stadio Tardini wild with
a last-gasp winner with literally the last kick of the game.
The Brazilian skipped past a defender and blasted a
long-range missile into the top corner that made Iezzo's
leap futile.
