ANALYSIS |
|
" Palermo are still in the hunt for
European football as they prepare for a meeting with
a Lecce team that can also afford to look upwards
instead of down.
The Sicilians are back in the top flight for the
first time since the 1970s and are sixth in the
Serie A table.
That would mean UEFA Cup football if they manage to
hold onto it while they are also in the race for the
fourth Champions League spot with traditional
heavyweights Juventus, AC Milan and Internazionale
looking well set to bag the first three.
One man with good reason to celebrate on Sunday will
be Franco Brienza who will be making his 100th
appearance in Palermo's pink and black colours.
Lecce's improved defending in recent weeks has not
altered the fact that by some margin they still have
the worst defence in the division.
Their goals conceded tally of 42 is three worse than
nearest challengers Parma and Messina's although
they have kept three clean sheets in their last five
matches.
However, Lecce's respectable 10th place in Serie A
can be explained by the fact that they have scored
42 goals, bettered only by Internazionale.nThe team from Apulia have certainly entertained the
neutrals this season and, with 32 points already,
are not far from the 40-point threshold which is
normally enough to guarantee top-flight status.
Lecce midfielder Guillermo Giacomazzi is well aware
the Sicilians will be gunning for revenge.
He told club website www.uslecce.it: "They are
playing well and have not conceded many goals
because they have a very solid midfield.
"They will be giving everything they have, that much
is certain."
Lecce have been hit by the flu bug that has been
wreaking havoc in Italy with Mali international
Souleymane Diamoutene and Croatian Sasa Bjelanovic
unable to train on Friday and thus must be
considered extremely unlikely to play at La Favorita.
There is better news regarding Erminio Rullo who was
able to train again on Friday after apparently
shaking off the bug.
For Palermo, Fabio Grosso and Matteo Guardalben are
back in full training and available for selection
but Pietro Accardi and Davide Possanzini are still
being treated for their respective ailments.
Massimo Mutarelli and Michele Ferri are also out
following reduced training regimes because of their
injury problems. Stefano Morrone is suspended after
his sending-off against Bologna.
Hot Palermo side host Zeman’s Lecce who do not seem
to be missing Bojinov much. The Rosanero are just
four points away from a Champions League spot even
though their main aim will be to reach a Uefa Cup
spot by the end of the season, something which they
can definitely achieve. Lecce might not be as
brilliant as they used to be in the early part of
the season but they are an attacking team which can
score goals any time. Also, Zeman seems to have
stabilized the defensive department as the team has
been conceding fewer goals than before.

OUTCOME |
Palermo are now fighting for a Champions' League spot at the
end of this thrilling encounter.
Francesco Guidolin extended his Rosanero contract until 2007
and marked his 300th Serie A match as a tactician, while
Zdenek Zeman returned to Sicily, where he was a Coach at the
start of his career in the early 1980's.
Stefano Morrone and Cristian Raimondi are suspended, while
Vincenzo Sicignano returns from his ban to guard the Lecce
goal.
Lece broke the deadlock after just six minutes with a
well-worked goal, though Fabio Grosso's error proved
decisive. Erminio Rullo swept a low cross towards Axel Konan
at the back post for a simple tap-in.
Palermo fought back and Eugenio Corini curled a free kick
inches wide of the near post, then Suleymane Diamoutene
needed a goalline clearance to keep out Cristian Zaccardo's
header after Sicignano had been left stranded by the
set-piece.
Mirko Vucinic was unbalanced and his volley went straight at
Matteo Guardalben as the first half was end to end stuff.
The referee pointed to the spot when he judged Lorenzo
Stovini to have pushed Luca Toni in the area. Corini stepped
up and saw his penalty saved, then Sicignano got back up to
parry Toni's follow-up and Franco Brienza's close-range
header thumped the upright as Lecce hung on to their lead
for dear life. That was the fifth penalty Sicignano has
saved in his career.
Inf act, a couple of minutes later they nearly doubled their
lead, as Vucinic blasted over the bar from seven yards.
Vucinic is one of Lecce's top scorers this season, but he
wasted another two golden opportunities with only Guardalben
to beat.
At the other end, Luca Toni's rising finish was parried by
Sicignano's shoulder as the goalkeeper bravely rushed off
his line.
Grosso's glancing header on a Corini corner kick was wide of
the target and Palermo were beginning to feel they'd never
score after Lamberto Zauli and Brienza shots were charged
down by Diamoutene. However, the move continued and Mario
Alberto Santana curled a stylish finish into the top corner
from the edge of the box.
It proved the breakthrough, as less than two minutes later
Palermo took the lead for the first time. Toni did some
great work down the flank and cut back for Santana to thump
home his second of the match,
The second half started in a similar vein, as Sicignano
saved from Zaccardo, then Toni spun off target and Brienza
fired wide from a tight angle after running on to Corini's
pass.
Konan's shot was deflected on to the side-netting by Grosso,
but it was only a warning side as Lecce drew 2-2 on 67
minutes. Cassetti's cross was nodded across the face of goal
by Vucinic and the ball was only cleared out as far as Konan
for a splendid strike.
It was certainly an entertaining game at the Stadio Barbera
and on 75 minutes Palermo restored their lead. Simone Barone
lifted a cross in for Toni's outstretched foot, although the
final touch might have come off Diamoutene.
There was a scare at the other end, as Guardalben took a
step backwards as he held on to a looping Cristian Ledesma
cross, but the ball did not appear to entirely cross the
line.
Moments later the Palermo goalkeeper rushed off his line to
close down Sam Dalla Bona, then Mariano Gonzalez blasted an
effort over the bar.
