ANALYSIS |
|
" The trip to Osasuna is widely regarded
as the biggest test of Wanderley Luxemburgo's fledgling
Real Madrid tenure, but the Brazilian believes his
side will have to win in Pamplona if they are to stand
any chance of claiming the Primera Liga title.
Madrid travel to Osasuna's El Sadar stadium, a ground
where they can traditionally expect one of the most
hostile receptions of the season, needing to win to
increase the pressure on Barcelona. Last week's win
over Espanyol, coupled with Barca's shock home defeat
to Atletico Madrid, saw Real Madrid close the gap
at the top of the table to just four points. With
Barcelona facing a potentially tricky visit to Real
Zaragoza on Saturday, a win in El Sadar could bring
the Catalans into striking distance for Madrid. Luxemburgo
said: "The important thing is that we are doing
our job. I am not worried about Barcelona, what we
have to do is win and to keep on winning.
"If we don't win our games then we have no chance
of finishing first. I know there is rivalry with Osasuna,
but that is not the question, the thing is that we,
Real Madrid, have to always win our games. It won't
be easy but we have to win. It is no good us going
there and waiting to see what will happen. Madrid
will make one change from the side that defeated Espanyol
4-0 last weekend with Thomas Gravesen, who scored
his first goal for the club in that win, returning
to action in place of the suspended Luis Figo.
Raul and Ronaldo will lead the attack, with David
Beckham on the right of a midfield diamond and Michael
Owen waiting for his opportunity on the bench. Meanwhile,
Osasuna captain Cesar Cruchaga is looking forward
to the challenge of taking on the galacticos.
"I think Madrid are the best team for us to
face at the moment, we have dropped points in our
last few games but we are playing very well and are
looking forward to it," he said. It's true they
are in form but there is no need for us to worry about
things like that because these games are special and
anything can happen."
The only change in the Osasuna side will be the return
of Rafa Clavero at left back in place of the suspended
Enrique Corrales. Real Madrid are flying at the moment,
and look unstoppable. Osasuna have drawn three out
of their last four home games, while Real have won
three out of their last four away trips. Im on Real

OUTCOME |
Substitute Michael Owen put speculation about his future to
the back of his mind as he helped take Real Madrid to a
seventh consecutive win which keeps them hot on the heels of
Primera Liga leaders Barcelona.
The former Liverpool striker, who this week has been
strongly linked with a move back to the Premiership, scored
with his first touch of the ball 14 minutes from time to
cancel out Pierre Webo's 36th-minute opener for Osasuna.
Three minutes later a howler from Osasuna goalkeeper Ricardo
Sanzol handed Real a scarcely deserved victory, as the
custodian spilled a David Beckham free-kick, allowing Ivan
Helguera to stab home the winner.
Since Wanderley Luxemburgo took over as the team's new head
coach in December, Real have gone on a phenomenal run to
battle their way back into the title race, and they are now
just four points adrift of Barca.
However, Osasuna really should have had the points wrapped
up before Real staged their late recovery.
Within the first attack of the game, Pablo Garcia's
dangerous free-kick was flicked on by Richard Morales, and
Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas had to be alert to tip the
ball onto the crossbar.
Casillas was once again called upon moments later when he
palmed away Valmiro Valdo's stinging left-footed drive from
25 yards.
The Real goalkeeper was in inspired form and Valdo was again
denied when his deflected effort was tipped around the post
by the agile Casillas.
However, after 36 minutes Casillas was finally beaten, as
Garcia's free-kick was glanced on by Morales, and Webo
shrugged off Helguera to lash home an angled left-footed
shot from eight yards out.
Morales wasted a glorious opportunity to double the lead for
the hosts when he flicked the ball over the crossbar from
six yards after latching onto Garcia's cross from the right.
Real, who had offered very little going forward in the first
half, were the first to threaten after the interval as Raul
pounced on a loose ball just outside the penalty area and
fired a left-footed across the face of goal.
Casillas once again had to be alert though, when he
scrambled back to superbly claw away a goalbound chip from
Valdo.
Valdo just could not find the crucial second goal and
moments later, after skipping in from the right flank, he
curled a left-footed shot onto the top of the crossbar from
the edge of the penalty area.
Valdo fired wide a right-footed shot from 10 yards, and then
Garcia curled a venomous left-footed free-kick from 25 yards
into the side-netting.
With time running out, Luxemburgo introduced Owen as a
replacement for Guti, and within seconds Real were back on
level terms.
Roberto Carlos' drilled free-kick from the edge of the area
was parried by Sanzol, and although Raul was then denied by
the goalkeeper, Owen stooped to head home from six yards.
Three minutes later Real completed their comeback with their
second goal of the evening. |
