Mallorca coach Hector Cuper has called on his players
to dig deep as they aim to end a three-match losing
streak which has left them deep in relegation
trouble.
The Balearic side take on Real Sociedad desperate
for a change in fortunes as they are now seven
points off safety.
However, the highly experienced Cuper has always
maintained his belief that they have the ability and
spirit to avoid the drop.
"The results of our rivals does have a marginal part
to play but for this team to stay up it is directly
down to us," said the Argentinian. We have to assume
a situation that we are in a separate zone and that
we must dig in so as to bring about an improvement
in our form immediately and move up the table.
"We now face a team on Sunday which has a lot of
good players who have plenty of experience and
quality. This is going to be a difficult match for
us but before we start to think of them we have to
sort out the problems that exist in our team. In the
last match against Villarreal we did not know how to
bring around a change to our bad run, either that or
we were not able to do it and get a positive result.
"This means that no matter what stage of the match
the team is struggling to raise its confidence and
win matches. Everyone saw the match and the rivals
had a lot of problems in creating chances, they
virtually got nowhere near our area, but when things
are not going for you one error undoes all the good
work and that was the case here.
"We are now at an important stage for us in our
survival, we must calm down a little, myself
included, and work so as to move away from this
situation for once and for all. I believe that soon
the run of bad luck will come to an end."
Meanwhile, experienced defender Miguel Angel Nadal
has brought an end to his illustrious playing career
after 18 seasons with Barcelona and Mallorca.
"It is the start now of a new cycle for me, this is
the end of the old one," said the 38-year-old. I
have always wanted to be a respected sportsman with
whom people had confidence but this season after
training I have not been satisfied with my
performance."
Sociedad managed an important win over Real Zaragoza
last time out as they try to avoid being sucked into
the relegation battle.
However, coach Jose Maria Amorrortu has suffered a
blow with the news that striker Darko Kovacevic will
miss out due to an Achilles tendon injury although
he is not allowing that to affect his thinking ahead
of the game.
"We must now not look back and believe that we can
do well and move upwards," Amorrortu said.
