ANALYSIS |
|
"Malaga are set to face a severe test of
their recent recovery with the visit of Espanyol
this weekend.
The Pericos responded to their worst run of the
season with victory last Sunday against Getafe in a
close match at the Olympic Stadium and the three
points put them back in a European spot in the
league and they will undoubtedly represent a stiff
test for Malaga.
Neither side constructed any real chances of note
before defender Toni Soldevilla stole in at the back
post to give Espanyol the lead and then Raul Tamudo
finished the match with a penalty.
Under Miguel Angel Lotina this season, Espanyol have
transformed themselves from relegation material to
candidates for a top-six finish and the coach is
proud of their achievements.
In particular he emphasised the importance of Ivan
de la Pena, who has caused problems for last two
visitors to Montjuic - Real Betis and Getafe. Lotina
will be without De la Pena against Malaga after the
midfielder picked up a thigh injury before last
week's match. He also has doubts over goalkeepers
Carlos Kameni and Erwin Lemmens, who are both
carrying knocks.
Malaga have built their recent revival on a solid
defence which has not conceded a goal in four of the
last five matches.
``This year we are having problems scoring goals but
now we have eased this by having a defence which is
extremely solid,'' said centre-half Fernando Sanz.
Espanyol have an awful away record recently,
conceding nine goals in their last three away trips,
and Malaga have a great defensive record - conceding
only one goal in their last four games. Malaga have
won two out of their last three home games and I
think they can shock Espanyol today, who will have
been rocked by their last two dismal away defeats
4-1 and 4-0. At 5/4 Malaga are worth a punt. Get ON!

OUTCOME |
Malaga gave their survival bid a real shot-in-the-arm with a
thrilling victory over 10-man Espanyol on Sunday.
The hosts scored through Juan Rodriguez, Miguel Angel and
Juan Jesus Juanito, as the visitors, who had lost Alex
Fernandez to a red card after 34 minutes, struggled to live
up to their billing as contenders for a place in the
Champions League.
However the home side saw their three-goal advantage trimmed
down by a late strike from Dani and then an own-goal from
Fernando Sanz, to set up a exciting finale.
Malaga took the lead after seven minutes, when Sergio Duda
floated a deep cross from the halfway line into the penalty
area, and with David Garcia de la Cruz unable to clear the
ball efficiently, Rodriguez showed great composure to chip
the ball over Carlos Kameni from eight yards out.
Eight minutes later Malaga added a second goal when Vicente
Valcarce centred from the left and Angel collected the ball
just outside the penalty area, skipped past a defender, and
slotted the ball into the bottom-right corner of the net
with a left-footed shot from 12 yards.
The away side were then dealt a big blow when Fernandez
picked up his second yellow card of the contest and was sent
off. Having been booked minutes earlier for pushing
Rodriguez in the face, Fernandez sent Angel crashing to the
ground with a poor tackle from behind.
Maxi Rodriguez came close for the visitors when he received
the ball from Daniel Jarque just inside the penalty area but
goalkeeper Francesc Arnau got down well to block the shot.
The last few minutes of the first half were quite tense as
both teams pushed forward searching for a goal, and despite
only having 10 players, Espanyol refused to give up hope of
getting back into the game.
Garcia and Rodriguez played a superb one-two only for Arnau
to once again come to the rescue, before keeping out Raul
Tamudo's header.
Espanyol would live to rue that double-miss late on in the
first half, as seven minutes after the break Malaga grabbed
a third goal.
Duda tried a shot from the right edge of the penalty area
and although Kameni was able to get a hand to the ball,
Juanito reacted quickly to tap the ball into the back of the
net from four yards.
Espanyol got back into the contest with a goal of their own
19 minutes from time.
Cesar Navas failed to clear a cross from the left, and
Tamudo played in Dani who blasted a right-footed shot into
the bottom left corner of the net from 10 yards.
Angel came close to scoring a fourth for Malaga with a
curling free-kick from 25 yards, but Kameni scrambled across
to claw the ball away from the corner of the net.
Three minutes from time Espanyol scored their second of the
afternoon to reduce the deficit to one.
Substitute Oscar Serrano made a surging run down the left
wing, and sent a great cross into the box that was diverted
into the net by the unfortunate Sanz.
In the dying seconds, Jarque nearly found the equaliser but
his long-range left-footed shot flew just wide of the
target.
