MATCH ANALYSIS
Palermo continue their quest for a place in next year's UEFA Cup with a trip to Livorno who still are not yet secure in the knowledge they will stay in the top flight next season.

Avoiding relegation was always the first objective for both clubs - Palermo had not played in the top flight since the 1970s before this season while Livorno's previous campaign in the elite was as long ago as 1949-50.

The goal has already been achieved by Palermo while three points for Livorno at the Stadio Armando Picchi would be a big step in that direction.

Palermo's Italian international forward Luca Toni told club website that he believed the UEFA Cup was the only realistic goal even if the Sicilian club is only a point off the Champions League places.

Toni said: "We have already secured our place in the top flight and now we are aiming for a more prestigious accolade but I think that qualifying for the Champions League is a bit of a dream because in Serie A all you need to do is lose two matches and you are finished."

Toni believes that Livorno will not be easy prey for the Sicilians who, like their opponents, were promoted to the top flight last summer.

"(Cristiano) Lucarelli is an excellent forward and he has so many attributes I admire," said Toni. But I am not thinking of just playing him but the entire team. It will be a tough game and there is always a passionate atmosphere and this game is a real test for our European aspirations."

Three Palermo players have been unable to train normally this weekend and are doubts for the trip to Tuscany.

The three casualties are Massimo Mutarelli, Pietro Accardi and Davide Possanzini who have all been following specific training schedules.

Definitely ruled out are experienced playmaker Eugenio Corini and Simone Barone who have both been outstanding for the Sicilians this season.

Palermo goalkeeper Matteo Guardalben said: "Until a few weeks ago I was the one who was always talking about staying up but now we have achieved that.

"I never thought we could be in contention for so prestigious a prize. Against Lecce and Roma we had to win and that should also be our plan against Livorno but we could also be pretty pleased with a point."

Livorno coach Roberto Donadoni will definitely be unable to call on the services of Jose Vidigal who is ruled out for three weeks with a muscle injury.

Livorno can take some comfort from the fact that they emerged victorious when the teams met at the Stadio Renzo Barbera in Palermo earlier this season.

Donadoni could choose to give a debut to Brazilian Paulinho who arrived this week.

"I have been following the teams fortunes on the internet," Paulinho told club website www.livornocalcio.it. "I was impressed with the win against AC Milan and the way the club has played this season."

A very good test for Palermo to confirm their recent excellent performances and chances of qualifying for Europe next year, as they travel to Livorno against a side in need of points to stay away from the relegation zone which is only 6 points behind. Should be a low-scoring good battle which might be won by a single episode.

MATCH OUTCOME

Luca Toni bagged a brace at the Stadio Picchi on his 100th Serie A appearance and despite slowing their progress, ten-man Palermo still go fifth.

Both these teams were promoted from Serie B in the summer and have had wildly differing campaigns. Livorno have certainly improved under Roberto Donadoni, especially on home turf, while Palermo's victory over Roma last week took them into sixth place. The Rosanero had to do without the suspended Eugenio Corini and Simone Barone, while Jose Luis Vidigal's thigh strain ruled him out for the Amaranto.

Andrea Barzagli flung himself at Cristiano Lucarelli as the striker lined up a shot, while at the other end Franco Brienza was the danger figure in the box.

Igor Protti fell under a challenge from Barzagli on 16 minutes, but the referee waved away timid penalty appeals. Vigiani charged through the centre soon after and drilled his finish just wide of the target.

There was bad news for Livorno when Jorge Vargas was stretchered off with a knee injury and replaced by Alessandro Lucarelli.

The Amaranto defence was still getting settled when Palermo took advantage of an error to break the deadlock. Brienza was unmarked at the back post and held up Fabio Grosso's centre for Luca Toni's tap-in from six yards.

Cristiano Lucarelli was booked for simulation when a corner kick was not cleared effectively and he let himself fall, while Lamberto Zauli's snapshot from distance shaved the woodwork.

In the second half, Toni tried to take on the entire Livorno defence by himself and nearly managed it, but hesitated before pulling the trigger.

At the other end, Cristiano Lucarelli only skimmed a cross and Protti was unable to turn in at the back post, then Matteo Guardalben was at full stretch to tip a dangerous Melara ball out for a corner.

Palermo were forced to play almost the entire second half in ten men after Cristian Zaccardo's second bookable offence for a foul on Vigiani.

It didn't take long for Livorno to take advantage of the situation, as a couple of minutes later they drew level. Cristiano Lucarelli's header from a Passoni corner kick was cleared off the line by Zauli, but only into the path of the other Lucarelli brother - Alessandro.

However, that situation lasted for only a few minutes before Palermo restored their lead. Luca Toni was a one-man menace upfront and he sprung the offside trap on Grosso's searching pass before placing a precise angled drive round the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Moments later there was controversy at the other end of the field, as Doga's header was blocked by Kewullay Conteh and some players claimed it was a handling offence.

The home side was extremely dangerous from set-pieces and Santana performed a goalline clearance on Alessandro Lucarelli's header, then as the move continued Guardalben got down to hold Doga's low strike.

The pressure eventually paid off on 74 minutes when Dario Passoni unleashed a fearsome strike from 25 metres that bounced just in front of Guardalben and slotted in at the near post.

It was now a very open game and Davide Balleri's cross found Protti for a header, though Guardalben was ready for the veteran. Palermo also nearly scored the late winner when Stefano Morrone's chip floated just over the bar.

Amelia fumbled Grosso's shot in stoppages, but both teams can be content to share the points at the end of this encounter.
