ANALYSIS |
|
" Juventus' title challenge has suffered
two unexpected setbacks in recent weeks and the Bianconeri
will be desperate to get back to winning ways when
they host third-placed Udinese at the Delle Alpi.
Just 10 days ago, Juve were eight pints clear at
the summit and looking likely to regain the Scudetto
crown they lost to AC Milan last season. But defeats
to Sampdoria and Palermo, coupled with two wins for
Milan, mean the gap between the two has been reduced
to two points.
The two reverses have suddenly left Juventus looking
vulnerable and they know that failure to stop the
rot at home to Udinese would give champions Milan
the chance to lead the division on Sunday evening.
Juve coach Fabio Capello will be eager to stop that
happening and Gianluca Zambrotta insists there is
no sense of crisis at the Turin club.
Zambrotta told club website www.juventus.it: "They
are just two incidents and it has just been an unlucky
period for us - every time our opponents have had
a shot they have scored. Let's just say that against
Samp we created a lot of chances but against Palermo
we went on to the field with the wrong mentality although
the second half was better than the first. The secret
is for us to go on the field with a different mentality
than we have had recently and start the game well.
We have learned our lesson. The important thing is
to put a stop to it now and it is an important test
for us. We have to get back to winning ways."
Udinese are themselves having an excellent season.
They are 10 points adrift of Juve and a victory at
the Delle Alpi would just about make them title contenders
again even if they do not have the resources of Sunday's
opponents and AC Milan.
Consecutive wins at the expense of Chievo and Brescia
have revived their hopes which looked to have been
dashed by a run of three consecutive defeats. Their
Italian international striker Antonio Di Natale is
in excellent form and he is convinced he and his team-mates
can inflict a third consecutive defeat on the Turin
giants. Two consecutive defeats have caused unrest
in the Juve’s camp as the Turin based giants
are not used to back-to-back defeats. Udinese’s
high flying season places them as a very difficult
opponent and so this will not be an easy match for
the home team who must win the game in order to keep
Milan at bay. Even a draw would be considered as a
failure by the Old Lady so a win is imperative in
this case.

OUTCOME |
A late goal from Udinese's David Di Michele caused Juventus'
nerves to jangle but it was not enough to derail the Turin
club's title bid.
Fabio Capello's men were under pressure after back-to-back
defeats which, coupled with last weekend's win for nearest
challengers AC Milan, had reduced their lead at the top to
two points.
But goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mauro Camoranesi were
enough to see Juve through a potentially tricky game against
the Champions League chasers.
The Bianconeri got off to the perfect start when
Ibrahimovic's quick thinking led to a first-minute goal for
the hosts.
The Sweden international caught Nestor Sensini and Felipe Da
Silva napping, burst through the pair of them and slotted
the ball past Morgan De Sanctis in the Udinese goal.
Three minutes later, David Pizarro saw a free-kick flash
past Gianluigi Buffon's right-hand post before a second
dead-ball from the Chilean ended with Stefano Mauri firing
wide after turning sharply.
After a quarter of an hour, Ibrahimovic flicked on a long
ball from the back which David Trezeguet volleyed just past
the left-hand post.
There had been a great deal spoken about Alessandro Del
Piero in recent weeks after he was dropped by Capello and
then by Italy coach Marcello Lippi.
His form has been patchy but Capello showed faith by giving
him the freedom of the Delle Alpi in a role behind
Ibrahimovic and Frenchman Trezeguet.
And he was close to justifying his inclusion when he latched
on to the ball after good work from Ibrahimovic, but he
could only shoot over the crossbar.
Udinese will be kicking themselves that neither of the two
chances they created before half-time were taken.
First, Antonio Di Natale did well to work his way into the
Juve box only to find the advertising hoardings behind
Buffon's goal.
And then half an hour into the game, Di Natale fed Dino Fava
for the best chance of the half but with only Italy's number
one to beat, the 27-year-old striker swiped at thin air.
Juve then demonstrated the difference between title-chasers
and European hopefuls with a clinical second.
Four minutes after the restart, Camoranesi burst from
midfield, swapped passes with Del Piero, and clipped the
ball past De Sanctis from the left edge of the penalty area.
The Argentina-born Italy international almost grabbed his
second when he met an Ibrahimovic pull-back but De Sanctis
pushed his effort behind.
Udinese sub Di Michele then played in Di Natale only for him
to miss the ball, like Fava had done in the first half.
With 20 minutes left, the Udine outfit thought they had
found a way back into the match but Fava's header was
incorrectly ruled out for offside.
But as Juve ran the clock down, sub Di Michele played a
one-two with Di Natale and found Buffon's bottom corner in
the second minute of stoppage time.
It was too late, however, and Udinese remain two points
behind Internazionale in the table.
