ANALYSIS |
|
Failure is not an option for Juventus in Sunday's
game against Siena if they wish to maintain their
push at the top of the Serie A standings.
Fabio Capello's men are hoping to end a
disappointing February on a high having squandered
an eight-point lead over AC Milan and made an
unimpressive return to their European challenge.
Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League defeat against
Spanish giants Real Madrid marked Juve's third loss
this month with the Bianconeri managing just one win
in their last five games.
And Juve's goalless draw at Messina last weekend
allowed Scudetto contenders Milan to draw level with
them on 54 points.
``It's really not what we had hoped for,'' admitted
captain Alessandro Del Piero.
However, it is the goalscoring drought that is
Juve's main concern ahead of the clash with Siena.
For a team that is aiming to clinch both the
Champions League and the Scudetto, one goal scored
and four conceded in five games is unacceptable.
Their recent loss of form is even more apparent when
looking at their results from the beginning of the
campaign with the Turin outfit taking five victories
in six games, netting 11 times and only giving one
away.
``Clearly we have to score more,'' admitted Del
Piero.
Things are not improving for the Bianconeri either
with their top scorer David Trezeguet still out of
action with the flu and pivotal midfielder Pavel
Nedved unable to play after suffering a head injury
in Madrid.
The only consolation for Juventus remains the fact
that rivals AC Milan face a bigger battle against
unbeaten Internazionale on Sunday evening and
without their top scorer Andriy Shevchenko.
A slip by Milan and a victory for Juve will be a
breath of fresh air for Capello's men, who must
brace themselves for a challenging two weeks ahead
which will see them take on Roma and Real Madrid
again.
It will be down to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Del Piero
to show their worth against a determined Siena with
the attacking duo currently struggling to harmonise
in front of goal.
Siena, meanwhile, have found their saviour in
Norwegian striker Tore Andre Flo, who has been a key
figure in their recent revival.
For a team that looked to be heading straight to
Serie B at the start of the year, things have taken
a turn for the better for Gigi De Canio's men.
Siena travel to the Delle Alpi unbeaten in seven
games and knowing that a positive result could see
them finally leave the drop zone.
Flo's crucial goal against Fiorentina in last
weekend's Tuscan derby allowed his team to move to
within a point of safety and the striker is hoping
for more of the same against Juve.
``If we go on the pitch without the conviction of
being able to get a positive result then we will be
beaten from the start,'' said Flo. Juve is a great team but we have not lost in seven
games and we can take some points in Turin.''
Siena will have to do without defender Giovanni
Pasquale and the injured midfielder trio Andrea
Ardito, Alfonso Camorani and Alin Stoica.
The perfect game for the Old Lady to return to
winning ways after a draw away to Messina and a
defeat at Madrid. Juventus need the three points,
knowing that later on in the evening Milan will have
a delicate match against rivals Inter in a game
which the Rossoneri can definitely drop points.
Siena have just won their first league match since
De Canio took over, after a series of unlucky draws.
The squad is playing well, but last weekend’s result
might relax them a bit too much.

OUTCOME |
Alessandro Del Piero bagged a brace - including one of the
best goals of his career - to put Juve back on track.
The Bianconeri had squandered an eight-point lead over the
last month, picking up just four points from their last four
games. Fabio Capello revived the trident attack with Marcelo
Zalayeta, Alessandro Del Piero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic
starting upfront. David Trezeguet was still out with flu and
Pavel Nedved remains hospitalised after a clash of heads
with Raul Bravo during their 1-0 defeat at Real Madrid
midweek.
Siena were also confident following their first win under
Gigi De Canio, beating local rivals Fiorentina to pull them
to the brink of safety. Left-back Giovanni Pasquale was
suspended for the visitors, while Igor Tudor returned to
face the club that still owns his contract.
Timid penalty appeals were waved away after two minutes when
Gianluca Zambrotta fell under Alberto's challenge, while
long-range efforts from Manuele Blasi and Zambrotta whistled
past the post.
Siena also proved dangerous with Rodrigo Taddei holding up
the ball for Tore Andre Flo's angled drive, then the
Brazilian went for goal himself with a low shot that was
well smothered by Gigi Buffon.
Alessandro Del Piero impressed and curled a free kick past
the post, but Enrico Chiesa wasted a golden opportunity when
Lilian Thuram clattered into Jonathan Zebina.
Del Piero looked noticably more confident and scored a
spectacular goal after 35 minutes. Marcelo Zalayeta skipped
past Colonnese and rolled the ball across the face of goal
for the Juve captain to flick it in with his heel from six
yards. It was one of the best goals of his long career and
just what Pinturicchio - and Juve - needed.
Ibrahimovic drilled wide from the edge of the box, but on
the stroke of half-time Juve really should have made it 2-0
when the Siena defence was caught unawares by a deflected
Zalayeta cross and Del Piero pounced only to be denied by a
desperate Alex Manninger save.
Emerson doubled their lead at the start of the second half.
Mauro Camoranesi's corner kick found the Brazilian for a
powerful header that Manninger couldn't keep out.
The trident was passing the ball around beautifully and
Ibrahimovic exchanged passes with Zebina until Colonnese
flung himself at Del Piero's finish.
There was a scare for Siena soon after, as Alex Manninger
rushed out to close down Ibrahimovic and was accidentally
kicked in the head, but the former Arsenal and Fiorentina
goalkeeper was able to continue after treatment.
Chiesa sprung the offside trap and threatened to get Siena
back into the game, but Fabio Cannavaro recovered to clear
the danger.
Referee Pierluigi Collina pointed to the spot for a Taddei
push on Emerson as they waited for a corner kick to come in
and Del Piero stepped up to convert the penalty for his
second of the game.
There were final spot-kick appeals for Cannavaro's challenge
on Flo, but it ends 3-0 for Juventus.
