Glorious
Goodwood betting
The famous July races, described by King Edward VII as
'a garden party with racing tacked on' are world renowned.
Taking place at what is often described as 'the world's
most beautiful racecourse' the five-day Festival Meeting
is a riot of colour, fashion, famous faces and spectacular
hats. A firm fixture in the English summer Season for 200
years, all of society's cognoscenti descend on Goodwood
each year to revel in its ravishing setting as well as to
marvel at the world's top jockeys, trainers and horses as
they battle it out on top of the Sussex Downs.
The views are truly breathtaking, and there are few sporting
spectacles more exhilarating than watching the world's greatest
thoroughbreds battling for the honours.
Goodwood makes its own fashion statement - casual linen
suits and Panama hats for the gentlemen and flirty summer
frocks topped with eye-catching hats for the ladies. Its
as much about effortless chic as it is about horseracing
at its most relaxed and chic. A drying day and the ground
was changed a notch to reflect it. With a breeze against the
runners, this race was going to be a test even before
Daggernought set a strong pace clear of the pack. Nothing
was left on the bridle into the final two furlongs but that
alone should not devalue this Group 3. Yasoodd and Stepping
Up have solid Group 3 form and, on the face of it, their
never-nearer finishes behind the first five gives the bare
form a solid look, although Araafa reversed form with the
pair in filling an honourable third.
HURRICANE CAT has a progressive profile and the relatively
late foal pricked his ears when ahead after taking time to
respond to rousting along from halfway. He shapes as if
further will prove no problem. However, 33-1with VCbet for
the 2,000 Guineas makes scant appeal, as he looks some way
down the Ballydoyle pecking order and sure to improve
through next season with more precocious types ahead of him
earlier, although he can uphold the Group 3 mantle of this
race.
This decent contest was run at a good clip, which played
into the hands of TURNKEY. A winner on bad ground last
spring, he had later run creditably in Group company but had
not been seen since disappointing in the Gimcrack at York in
August.
Settled in mid-division, he made him move approaching the
furlong mark and kept on well up the hill to win in the
style of a horse who should appreciate an extra furlong.
Gifted Gamble had a bit to find with a few of these rivals
on last year's form, but he confirmed that he had trained on
with an excellent effort in second - though this ground may
have suited him better than it did some of those behind.
One Putra, an all-the-way winner at Windsor last season, ran
another good race from the front but could find nothing
extra from the furlong mark. However, trainer Michael Jarvis
expressed himself well-satisfied with this first run of the
season from the colt and reckoned there was a nice race to
be won with him this year |
