ANALYSIS |
|
Luciano Spalletti and Dino Zoff must leave
their past affiliations behind them when they come
face to face in a potentially thrilling encounter at
the Franchi stadium. Things could not be going
better for coach Spalletti, with Udinese currently
level on 41 points with Sampdoria in fourth position
in Serie A, a place that would guarantee them the
last Champions League spot come the end of the
season.
But the self-confessed Fiorentina fan is not jumping
with joy as his beloved Viola are struggling in the
competition. Spalletti's love for Fiorentina goes
back to his teenage years, when he spent two seasons
playing for the Viola's youth team.
He joined in the celebrations as the Tuscany team
returned to the top flight last summer and he is
hoping they will avoid relegation by the season's
end. But things are not looking favourable for
Zoff's outfit. Fiorentina are just one point clear
of the drop zone after taking only 26 points in 25
games.
Not even the arrival of the Friuli-born coach has
inspired the team as they have failed to find the
winning formula in the top flight.
Zoff, born in the region known to have produced the
best football tacticians in Italy, with Juventus
boss Fabio Capello among the prodigal sons of Udine,
took over Fiorentina's hot seat in January following
the dismissal of Sergio Buso. But not even the
highly acclaimed coach has been able to solve the
team's problems, having only achieved one victory in
his five games in charge.
"I really didn't expect Fiorentina to be suffering
at this point of the season," admitted Spalletti. In
the summer everyone pointed to Fiorentina as the
surprising team of the campaign but that has not
been the case."
The 2-1 triumph against fellow strugglers Parma
appeared to mark a brighter time ahead for
Fiorentina but last weekend's 1-0 loss against
10-man Siena put them right back in trouble.
"I watched their game against Siena and I can only
say that I have never seen them play so badly,"
added Spalletti.
Fiorentina's situation is somewhat surprising
considering the exciting talent they have in their
team, with Italian international Fabrizio Miccoli
and Bulgarian rising star Valeri Bojinov among their
top players.
General director Fabrizio Lucchesi is under no
illusions as to where they are lacking.
"Our real problem is the fact that we are not a team
yet," he said. We lack the mentality that, for
example, Siena has, that mentality is not shared by
the whole group."
Udinese cannot afford a defeat that could knock them
out of the European positions with Palermo and Roma
out to overtake the Bianconeri. But a defeat could
prove disastrous for the Viola, considering they
still have to play against high-flying Roma,
Juventus, Internazionale and AC Milan.
Fiorentina will be without midfielder Enzo Maresca,
who is struggling with a back injury, while the
absences of Udinese pair Valerio Bertotto and David
Pizarro, both out with the flu, will be a relief to
Zoff. However, Spalletti is set to have Marek
Jankulovski back in the fold as he has recovered
from flu.
The Viola troubles continue as they try to win
their second match since Zoff took over 7 games ago.
In front of them they will have an Udinese side
strong on the fact that they are still in a very
good position to reach a Champions League spot so
they will be all motivated to avoid defeat.
Fiorentina must win and with Bojinov integrating
better into the team tactics after a week of
training camp, this might be the perfect chance for
the Viola to obtain the three points.

OUTCOME |
Valeri Bojinov was stretchered off after scoring his first
Fiorentina goal and the Viola threw away a 2-0 lead to draw
with Udinese.
The Viola were desperate for points after losing four of
their five games with Dino Zoff in charge and the dismal 1-0
defeat at local rivals Siena last week saw the entire squad
locked into a hotel to best prepare for this match.
Hidetoshi Nakata was dropped in favour of Chris Obodo, while
ex-Udinese star Martin Jorgensen supported the front two.
Vincenzo Iaquinta recovered from two games out with a flu
virus to complete the Friuli trident attack with David Di
Michele and Antonio Di Natale. It was also a special
occasion for Luciano Spalletti who, despite having Coached
their local rivals Empoli, is a lifelong Viola fan.
Fabrizio Miccoli sprinted past defenders and set up Luca
Ariatti's strike only for it to be deflected wide of the
target by Felipe.
On 12 minutes Cristiano Lupatelli rushed across the face of
goal to push out a Marek Jankulovski free kick.
However, Fiorentina really could not have gone closer to a
goal than about 60 seconds later. Miccoli ran away from his
marker and Morgan De Sanctis got a fingertip to his angled
drive - enough to turn the ball on to the inside of the far
post. The Udinese goalkeeper was grateful to see the ball
roll back into his arms just before it could completely
cross the line.
Valeri Bojinov has not been lucky since moving from Lecce in
January, including a red card and poor performances. He
finally got his first goal in a Fiorentina jersey when he
sprung the offside trap on Jorgensen's pass and picked his
spot at the near post to beat De Sanctis, but the ex-Lecce
man injured his upper thigh during the move and was
stretchered off. Initial reports suggest it could be a
fairly serious strain.
Another mid-season signing, Giampaolo Pazzini, came on for
the unfortunate Bulgarian soon after. The Viola were fired
up and Miccoli's sweeping cross nearly found Pazzini at the
far post.
At the other end, Lupatelli's error nearly let Udinese in
for an equaliser as Di Michele pounced on the goalkeeper's
poor touch, but couldn't keep the ball in play.
Fiorentina doubled their lead on the half-hour mark with
another well-worked move. Miccoli's floating cross found the
head of captain Ariatti at the far post for a glancing
header, but the Udinese defence was caught ball-watching.
Udinese were in shock, but they still managed to pull a goal
back on the stroke of half-time. A corner kick was not
cleared effectively and Antonio Di Natale's shot was only
parried into the path of Sulley Ali Muntari for a
close-range tap-in.
This boosted their confidence and Lupatelli allowed another
Muntari strike to squirm between his legs, but the 'keeper
was able to capture the loose ball before Iaquinta could get
on the end of it.
Miccoli has won over the Stadio Artemio Franchi crowd and
his right-foot snapshot from the edge of the box skimmed the
woodwork before a free kick was well held at the start of
the second half.
However, just as Fiorentina seemed to be taking control
again, Udinese struck to draw level. A defensive distraction
allowed Di Michele to hold up Jankulovski's cross for an
Antonio Di Natale close-range volley. The ex-Empoli striker
was set to join the Viola in the summer, but the Friuli club
came in with the better terms.
These two sides drew 2-2 back on October 24, so evidently
goals are guaranteed when the teams cross paths. It was now
end to end stuff with anyone likely to score.
Jorgensen's strike was smothered, but Nestor Sensini also
suffered an injury and was replaced by Per Kroldrup.
The Viola defenders were clearly anxious and repeatedly gave
Lupatelli dangerous backpasses that were nearly intercepted
by Iaquinta.
Miccoli terrorised the udinese defence and put in a great
cross for Pazzini, whose free header was just past the
upright.
Goalscorer Di Natale was stretchered off after picking up a
knock to his ankle and made way for centre-forward Dino Fava
for the last eight minutes. Udinese were forced to play the
last stages in ten men as substitute Pinzi picked up his
second yellow card for tugging Chiellini's jersey.
William Viali slammed a long-range effort over the bar,
while Fava's backheel set up Iaquinta for a low drive.
