ANALYSIS |
Espanyol may be classed as `the other' team in
Barcelona - but that has not stopped them from
launching a serious assault on European football for
next season.
With a dozen games to go, Espanyol stand as good a
chance as any of the teams trailing leaders Barca
and second placed Real Madrid to reach the Champions
League.
That would be quite an accomplishment considering
they narrowly avoided relegation last season.
Espanyol gained a valuable point at Barcelona in
midweek and now they will be going for broke at home
to Levante on Sunday.
Goalkeeper Carlos Kameni said: ``It is not going to
be easy now against Levante.
``They have had a good season and in their last game
away from home, they beat Mallorca in Son Moix. But
we now need to win as there is no point picking up
points in difficult matches if you then lose them in
matches you should win. So far we have achieved
nothing and we need to concentrate and work hard as
that is the only way we are going to succeed.''
Miguel Angel Lotina's side put in a committed
display in the goalless draw with their bitter
rivals on Tuesday to leave them in sixth place after
the midweek fixtures.
With the five teams chasing third position separated
by just two points, Espanyol know they have to come
up trumps on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium if they
are to stay in the hunt.
Kameni was the hero of the evening against Barca,
the Cameroon keeper making a series of stunning
saves to deny the home side victory.
With Raul Tamudo and Ivan de la Pena injured, Lotina
had to improvise by playing Daniel Jarque in
midfield - although he was later red-carded for
dangerous play - and Fredson in attack.
Espanyol survived a number of scares but they
asserted themselves well and Kameni insists they
must follow it up with victory over Levante.
Kameni acknowledges it will be a tight end to the
campaign, with so many clubs fighting for the
European spots.
``It is difficult to say where we can now finish the
season. It is a question that everyone is asking,''
he added. We know what we want and that it will not
be easy but this is a situation that several teams
are in.There are clubs that are doing very well and
that have the same objectives as us. So I am sure
that the end of the season is going to be very
interesting and of course we want to give a reason
for celebration to the fans.''
Kameni's performances this season have attracted the
interest of Europe's top sides but he claims he has
no plans to move.
``I am happy with the way I played against Barca but
this is not the first time I have done well. It is a
number of years since Espanyol took anything
positive from the Nou Camp and on Tuesday we did
that. Espanyol have given me a lot. I am very
relaxed and content here in this club and this city.
I have three years left on my contract here and I
have plenty more to give this club that showed
confidence in me to sign me last summer. I can say
that I am an Espanyol fan.''
Tamudo and Jarque will both miss the Levante game
through injury and suspension respectively, while De
la Pena is a fitness doubt.
Levante will be buoyed by their last away
performance, a 2-1 victory against San Moix
strugglers Mallorca, but coach Bernd Schuster will
be disappointed to have only picked up a point at
home to basement side Numancia on Wednesday.
Their strong start to the season is beginning to ebb
away and they face a tough test against an Espanyol
side who have lost just one game at home all
campaign. Im on the home side today.
The visitors will be without defender Pablo Pinillos,
who is suspended.

OUTCOME |
Espanyol continued their push for a place in Europe after
scraping a 2-1 win over Levante at the Olympic Stadium on
Sunday.
The home side were far from their best, and went behind
after 23 minutes when on-loan Barcelona striker Sergio
Garcia gave Levante the lead.
Espanyol drew level through Jose Amavisca, and Maxi
Rodriguez earned them three points with a second-half
strike.
Espanyol started with youngster Jonathan Soriano partnering
Dani Garcia in place of the injured Raul Tamudo, and
Amavisca was preferred to Oscar Serrano on the left wing.
It was the well-travelled Amavisca who helped fashion the
first real opening of the game.
He crossed to the far post where Maxi played the ball back
into the danger zone.
It fell to Jonathan but he shot wide from 15 yards when he
should have done better.
Espanyol were also lacking the creative flair of the injured
Ivan de la Pena, but they still had the greater impetus with
Jonathan causing a nuisance in attack.
But against the run of play it was Sergio Garcia who broke
the deadlock at the other end.
Felix Ettien supplied the ball from the right of the area,
and the Spain international made no mistake from six yards.
Espanyol trailed for less than five minutes.
Levante keeper Jose Mora parried a Jonathan shot only as far
as Amavisca who side-footed the ball home.
Levante were gifted a golden chance to restore their
advantage by an erratic piece of play from Cameroon keeper
Carlos Kameni.
Kameni skied a clearance and then chased the ball which went
out of play. Stranded, he attempted to challenge for the
throw-in and the ball was played to Vladimir Manchev, but he
.shot wide with only a defender on the line.
Espanyol turned the screw in attack, and a defensive header
on the line was all that prevented Fredson giving the home
side the lead before half-time.
Espanyol were subdued in the second half, and the game
became sloppy with neither side creating chances.
Serran Corominas was introduced for Fredson as coach Miguel
Angel Lotina looked to introduce more of an attacking
threat.
The change certainly produced a spark from the home side. A
Corominas cross found Amavisca at the far post, but his
cut-back was blocked.
From the resulting corner Maxi continued his fine form in
front of goal, firing home from the edge of the area.
Levante were forced to push forward and found holes in the
Espanyol defence. Juan Juanma had a shot from the edge of
the area which Kameni did well to tip behind for a corner.
Then Alberto Rivera lashed a shot inches wide from inside
the box.
Espanyol have made a name for themselves this season as a
strong defensive unit, but in this game they hung on with
both centre halves struggling. Kameni again made a mistake
in the closing stages, failing to reach a ball that Gustavo
Reggi headed over.
