ANALYSIS |
|
" Espanyol striker Dani Garcia wants
his side to prove they deserve a place in Europe next
season by bouncing back from their recent slump with
victory over Getafe.
Having surprised many with their strong start to
the current campaign, doubts appear to have crept
into Miguel Angel Lotina's men. They have slipped out
of the top six after a run of four games without a
win.
The disappointing streak has seen Espanyol's previously
rock-solid defence concede 11 goals, almost doubling
their entire tally for the season, with last weekend's
4-0 drubbing against Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu
a particularly demoralising affair. Lotina can call
on striker Raul Tamudo again, as the Spain striker
returns from suspension, which means Dani will probably
drop back to play in a deeper position.
Getafe boss Quique Sanchez Flores picked out Espanyol's
Ivan De La Pena as the danger man.
But he insisted his side would not make any special
arrangements to deal with the lynchpin midfielder,
as the capital club - 13th in the table - continue
their quest for their first away win of the season.
De La Pena is the best passer of the ball in Spain,
and also the player with the greatest vision,"
said Flores.
"We have played teams with similar types of
players but the way to stop them is to play collectively
as a unit. We need to keep the space between the defenders
and midfielders as narrow as possible, and play all
the football as far as possible from our own goal.
"Espanyol played very well in the first half
of the season but they seem to have dropped off a
little of late. Last weekend's defeat may have put
some doubts in their minds, but it will also have
made them very keen to put things right. Every away
game seems like a good chance for us to earn our first
victory but it is not a subject which I worry about
- as long as we play well." Flores has Diego
Rivas suspended in midfield so will probably call
upon Raul Albiol to step into the holding role, as
he reverts to his preferred 4-4-2 formation. With
Ivan Riki and Valentin Pachon out injured, new recruit
Jaime Asen could get his first start for the club.
Espanyol have not won in four matches while Getafe
have drawn three out of their last four away trips,
only conceding two goals. The odds on a home win 8/13
are way too short. Get on the draw at 5/2 with Skybet.

OUTCOME |
It took Espanyol until injury-time to make the breakthrough
against Getafe but two quickfire goals sealed a win that
moves them into fifth place.
A strike from Antoni Soldevilla was swiftly followed by a
penalty from Raul Tamudo at the end of a game where Espanyol
had made hard work of a Getafe team labouring at the wrong
end of the table.
It was not a pretty contest and clear-cut chances were few
and far between, although Espanyol at least had the excuse
that their playmaker Ivan de la Pena, who has been in
excellent form, was ruled out after injuring his thigh in
the warm-up.
They missed his influence throughout and despite having the
lion's share of possession, the home side were unable to
break down a Getafe rearguard which has been strong all
season.
Espanyol were reduced to taking pot-shots from distance that
failed to trouble Javier Sanchez Broto in the visiting goal
while Gabi Fernandez and Victoriano Nano spurned the
half-chances that fell Getafe's way during a dire first 45
minutes.
In the second half, Getafe's left-sided midfielder Daniel
Kome, who had replaced Gheorghe Craioveanu, was involved in
a bust-up with Espanyol's centre-half Alberto Lopo.
For the remainder of the game, he was subjected to racial
abuse from the stands that has come to mar Primera Liga
games this season.
Espanyol had a similar problem in their last home match
against Real Betis with Brazilian midfield Marcos Assuncao
on the end of the chanting, leading the club to issue an
announcement over the tannoy system.
The best chance for the home side came midway through the
second half as Alberto Lopo's header was superbly saved by
Broto.
Espanyol's highly-rated goalkeeper Carlos Kameni was not to
be outdone, though, and also made a top-class save from
Getafe captain Angel Vivar Dorado, as the visitors pushed
forward sensing a win was there for the taking.
But with the game seemingly drifting towards a stalemate, it
was the Catalan side who were to have the last laugh.
Two minutes into injury-time a cross from the right from
Daniel Jarque bounced around the Getafe penalty area before
it landed at the feet of Soldevilla.
He then fired past Broto and into the corner to give
Espanyol the lead.
And with only seconds left, Broto brought down Tamudo when
he was clean through on goal and was promptly shown the red
card.
Tamudo dusted himself down, stepped up and sent substitute
goalkeeper Sergio Aragoneses the wrong way to put an unfair
gloss on the scoreline.
Espanyol took advantage of rivals Villarreal's slip-up at
Sevilla to cement their place among the European
challengers.
Getafe drop to 14th but remain five points above the
relegation places |
