ANALYSIS |
|
Espanyol will be looking for a convincing victory
against Albacete on Saturday after a poor start to
the second half of the season dented their hopes of
securing a place in Europe.
Under coach Miguel Angel Lotina, the pericos made a
tremendous start to the campaign, rarely dropping
out of a Champions League place before Christmas as
talk switched from the annual fears of relegation to
much grander plans.
However, just one win in six matches, including a
3-2 defeat to Malaga last week, suggests that dreams
of playing the likes of AC Milan and Manchester
United are now slipping away.
Lotina has not given up on a top-four finish,
though, and has highlighted Celta Vigo's progress in
the 2002-03 season as the template to follow.
The Galician team, under the guidance of Lotina, was
then in a similar position to Espanyol with 14 games
to go but still managed to clinch a place in the
Champions League.
``Last week against Malaga we did not show enough
motivation to win,'' Lotina said.
``We went out and made it too easy for them at the
start. We need now to raise our heads and start
battling as all is still possible. I was in a
similar situation to this with Celta in the past and
we made it into the Champions League and I think
this team is good enough to do it as well,'' he
added.
Since signing from Bordeaux mid-way through last
season, defender Mauricio Pochettino has been a rock
at the back for Espanyol and his absence in recent
weeks through a calf injury has been a big loss.
He is currently stepping up his training and while
Saturday may be too soon for him, he is looking at a
possible return on Tuesday in the Barcelona derby at
the Nou Camp.
Midfielder Ivan de la Pena is also missing as he
continues to recuperate from a thigh strain and he
too hopes for a comeback against his former club
Barca.
Meanwhile, Albacete's new coach Martin Monteagudo
will come to the Olympic Stadium ready to scrap for
points after two consecutive defeats has left them
in the bottom three.
The recent demise led to the departure of former
coach Jose Gonzalez this week and Monteagudo has
clear ideas of what he wants for the club, although
he claims drastic action is not what is needed.
``With so little time to prepare for the game
against Espanyol what I am looking for is that each
individual player knows their job exactly,'' he
explained. I don't want to give them too many new
ideas but rather make it a smooth transition. It is
impossible to do a complete changeover, which would
take several months, in scarcely four days. I
believe that in this group there are great
professionals and they are doing what they can to
take the team forward.''

OUTCOME |
Espanyol continued their pursuit of a place in European
competition after a victory over relegation-threatened
Albacete.
Espanyol started strongly and goals from Maxi Rodriguez and
Raul Tamudo put them in the driving seat.
But a second half goal from Antonio Pacheco forced Miguel
Angel Lotina's side to hang on until the end.
Espanyol scored after just five minutes with a goal which
Albacete keeper Raul Valbuena will want to quickly forget.
Dani Garcia crossed a harmless ball from the right touchline
in the direction of Maxi in the penalty area.
The keeper came for the ball but failed to reach it and the
Argentinian was left with the simple task of heading the
ball home.
Albacete had a chance to hit back straight away but Javier
Francisco saw his shot blocked by Antonio Ito.
Espanyol were playing the ball around well and breaking down
the Albacete defence.
A long ball from Alberto Lopo allowed Tamudo to scamper
clear but his shot on the half-volley was comfortable for
Valbuena.
Espanyol's dominance was rewarded with a second goal from
Tamudo after 22 minutes.
A Maxi corner was headed goalwards by Daniel Jarque and
parried well by Valbuena but only to Tamudo who scrambled
the ball home from five yards.
Even without the injured Ivan De La Pena, Espanyol were
bossing the midfield with Ito working hard and Maxi on the
right wing the key link up with the forwards, coming inside
at times to pick up possession.
Fredson was unlucky not to extend the Pericos' advantage
when he saw a powerful 30-yard strike come back off the
woodwork.
Dani also had a tame header from a good position saved well.
Albacete came out for the second half in a more attacking
frame of mind and began to cause problems for the home
side's defence, on one occasion Carlos Kameni saved well
from the feet of Elias Molina.
Albacete were attacking well down the wings while they
gained more menace up front with the introduction of David
Sanchez for Elias.
Pacheco brought Albacete back into the match with an
impressive strike from 25 yards.
He ran to the edge of the box and then hit his shot into the
top corner which Kameni at full stretch could only get his
fingertips to and was unable to stop the ball from going in.
Espanyol substitute Ferran Corominas had the chance to
re-establish the two goal cushion but after rounding the
keeper his cross-come-shot was cleared off the line.
Openings emerged at either end as Ablacete pressed for the
equaliser.
Sanchez saw a shot go narrowly past the post while at the
other end Espanyol had chances to make the game safe.
Tamudo and Corominas had the pick of the chances but they
failed to capitalise on them.
Corominas was guilty of missing from just five yards out
with 10 minutes to go but Espanyol hung on to the end to
claim three valuable points.
