MATCH ANALYSIS
A rejuvenated Deportivo, looking for a back-door entry into Europe, host a motoring Malaga side who have won four on the trot, banged six into Osasuna at the Sadar, and picked up 19 of the last 24 points, more than even Real Madrid (18) and Barcelona (17). Deportivo and Irureta got a new lease of life from their 2-0 win over Real Madrid, and worked hard in a tough draw at Getafe. Rather surprisingly, they are only 6 points away from a Champions League berth, and believe they have a shot. Any chances, however, would be very much outside ones, with Villareal, Espanyol, Sevilla, Betis and Valencia fighting hard for the third and fourth spots behind the two Spanish giants.

But Irureta seems to be enjoying the job again. However, in his way, are a side who have quietly picked up 19 from the last 24 points on offer. It is put into perspective when compared with Real Madrid (18), and Barcelona (17) over the same period. It seems even more incredible when one notes that Malaga sacked coach Manzano mid-season, and were still in the relegation zone when this run began. Coach Antonio Tapia has since fused new life into the team, and a UEFA cup spot isn’t out of reach for the earstwhile relegation battlers.

With the 1-6 walloping of Osasuna at the Sadar just a week old, the encounter has been scheduled as the feature match on Sunday evening, with Valencia playing Real and Osasuna hosting Barcelona on Saturday due to the giants’ mid-week dates with Juventus and Chelsea, respectively.

This is very tough one to call, thanks to an unpredictable Deportivo. If they get it right, their superior squad will run the match. Slightly wrong, and Malaga could hit them bad. However, Coloccini and Andrade are forging a great defensive partnership, and will be difficult to get through. A home win!

MATCH OUTCOME

Deportivo La Coruna kept alive their hopes of claiming a European spot at the end of the season after they saw off Malaga at the Riazor on Sunday night.

Spanish international striker Diego Tristan scored the only goal of a largely uninspiring game from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time as Depor picked up their ninth win of the season, a result that moves them to within four points of fifth-placed Valencia.

The penalty was awarded by referee Carlos Velasco Carballo after Lionel Scaloni went to ground under a challenge from Sergio Duda and Tristan, with the final kick of the first half, planted his penalty into the roof of Francesc Arnau's net.

Malaga's misery was completed when they lost Cesar Gonzalez Navas to a second yellow card in the dying moments to finish the game with 10 men.

Despite an indifferent campaign which has seen the club generally languishing in mid-table, Depor have beaten both Valencia and Real Madrid in recent weeks to prove they are still capable of competing with the biggest teams.

Malaga can hardly be considered among Spain's elite but they came into this match on the back of four straight wins and made it difficult for Depor before slumping to their 13th defeat of the season.

And it was the visitors who made the early running with Fernando Baiano and Duda combining only for Duda to shoot from distance when the on-running Baiano was demanding a return pass.

Miguel Angel was next to try his luck as Malaga went on search of the opening goal.

He controlled Fabricio Coloccini's headed clearance on his chest before lashing a superb volley inches wide of the Depor goal.

Depor were struggling to match Malaga early on and the away side had another attempt on goal in the 18th minute when Duda produced some sublime individual skill to set up Marcelo Romero, whose shot lacked precision and was safely gathered by Gustavo Munua in the home goal.

The game settled down after that as Depor came more into the match, creating shooting opportunities through Victor Sanchez and Tristan, whose 33rd-minute effort was superbly saved by Arnau.

However, Arnau was left with no chance to save 12 minutes later even though he correctly guessed the direction of Tristan's penalty.

And that proved to be the match-winner as Depor kept Malaga at bay in the second half.

The visitors' best chance of an equaliser came in the 67th minute when a brilliant move involving Baiano and Duda resulted in the ball reaching Miguel Angel six yards from goal.

However, just as the Malaga player looked set to score, Mauro Silva made a superb last-ditch challenge to prevent Angel getting his shot away.

Romero had one last effort for Malaga with a shot from 20 yards out, but that was deflected behind for a corner and moments later the south coast side were reduced to 10 men when Navas picked up an innocuous-looking second booking, an incident which effectively ended their challenge.
