" If Cagliari played all of their
games at fortress Sant`Elia, they would probably be
cruising towards the Scudetto but away form has hurt
the Sardinian club's chances of challenging for honours.
Gianfranco Zola and co have only won once away from
home all season, but they have never had as good a
chance of taking all three points as they have this
weekend at Brescia - a team with just a single triumph
at their own ground. Newcomers to the top flight this
season, Cagliari prefer to be positive and focus on
the fact that they are looking to consolidate their
place in Serie A.
"It's true that we are in eighth position, but
I'm not looking up the table," said Cagliari
coach Daniele Arrigoni. Those squads that are higher
up in the table cannot be compared with us. If we
do not lose against Brescia on Sunday, I see our salvation
as being closer." The Rossoblu have enjoyed a
successful season despite lapses of weakness in defence.
Cagliari have scored 33 goals but have leaked 36 in
23 matches in Serie A.
The defence has been so shaky that Sunday's opponents
Brescia, the second-bottom team in Serie A, have only
let in 29. Meanwhile Brescia's problem might be described
as a Roberto Baggio hangover because without the creative
influence of the retired `Divine Ponytail' they have
managed to score just 15 goals all season. The task
for Brescia, who appointed Alberto Cavasin as their
new coach following the sacking of Gianni De Biasi,
is to tighten up at the back and start stringing together
wins to climb out of the bottom three.
Cavasin, an experienced coach with a reputation as
a motivational leader, has already sounded the call
to battle. De Biasi is the ninth coach to have been
forced out in Serie A this campaign. He was shown
the door after Brescia's 1-0 defeat at home to Udinese
last weekend, a result that left them 19th in the
20-team league with only 20 points from 23 matches.
They are three points from safety with nearly half
the campaign still to play. Brescia president Gino
Corioni initially backed De Biasi and insisted he
was going to keep his job. But one day later, Corioni
announced his dismissal.
"De Biasi has paid the price of only clinching
three points in nine games and not being able to explain
what was wrong," Corioni said. "We had simply
lost the trust of the coach." Brescia will have
to do without injured midfielder Roberto Guana and
defender Gilberto Martinez while Cagliari will be
without suspended striker Antonio Langella and injured
frontman Davide Suazo. With new coach Cavasin replacing
the fired De Biasi during the week, the Rondinelle
will be motivated to achieve a win which in recent
weeks has been very elusive. Cagliari’s excellent
season has been marred with a poor track record which
stopped them from achieving an even higher league
placing. This might be the Rossoblu’s chance
of winning points away from home even though Brescia
will have the home advantage.
