MATCH ANALYSIS

" Real Betis coach Lorenzo Serra Ferrer feels the clash with Athletic Bilbao will provide an indicator of how far his Champions League-chasing side have come this season. Ferrer saw his men climb into sixth position in the Primera Liga with a 3-1 win over Osasuna last weekend.

Betis now lie just one point off the third and fourth Champions League spots, currently occupied by Valencia and Sevilla. And Ferrer admits the encounter with the Basque outfit, who have lost just one match at home this season, is a good test of their European credentials.

"We will be able to show in San Mames if we are a great team or not," he said. "Athletic are so strong at home and so it will be a good opportunity to test our potential. But the main aim is to take something positive from the game and we must go there with that idea. If we come back with three points or a draw then that also would be very positive. Despite gaining a fairly comfortable three points against Osasuna at the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera thanks to strikes by David Rivas, Marcos Assuncao - his third goal in successive games - and Ricardo Oliveira, Ferrer insists there is room for improvement.

"In the first half, we created a lot of chances to grab a goal and in the second we did not push forward as much but instead waited for counter-attacks. Again, we had several chances but only scored one of them," he added. But a team cannot always win and we are a team which has virtues and limitations. Overall I am happy with the way we are playing and the signs are good for this season but I think that the team has a margin in which to improve."

Ferrer faces a selection headache in defence against Athletic with his squad suffering a catalogue of injuries and suspensions. Juan Melli and Rivas are banned, while Washington Tais, Paolo Castellini and Luis Fernandez are all injured. The back-line is likely to consist of Juan Canas, Oscar Varela, Juanito and David Llano. Ninth-placed Athletic, unbeaten in eight games, are six points adrift of a UEFA Cup place. They could only manage a 1-1 draw against Deportivo La Coruna last weekend in a game in which they had plenty of chances to clinch the victory.

"I have always said it is an honour to coach Athletic and what will happen will happen," said coach Ernesto Valverde, who has been approached by the club to renew his contract. This week we have a vital game because we are now a number of points off where we want to be and we have dropped several opportunities to win matches recently. We now play against a team who are in a position where we should be. Bilbao have scored ten goals in their last four home games, while betis have lost three out of their last four away trips. Im on Bilbao at a very good EVENS at Skybet!

MATCH OUTCOME
Ten-man Real Betis went from 3-0 up to 4-3 down before Ricardo Oliveira completed his hat-trick and the visitors' comeback in an eight-goal thriller at San Mames.

Betis raced to a 3-0 lead within the opening 25 minutes with two from Oliveira and a Joaquin Sanchez effort before they were reeled in thanks to an Ismael Urzaiz brace and goals from Carlos Gurpegi and Francisco Yeste.

But despite having defender Alejandro Lembo sent off in the 74th minute, Betis' top scorer Oliveira struck late on to cap a remarkable game.

The goal rush started early, when Oliveira struck after capitalising on a defensive error with just four minutes on the clock.

He played a one-two with Fernando Fernandez before sliding the ball under the advancing goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia.

Seven minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead through Joaquin Sanchez, who made the most of the space afforded by the Athletic defence by racing past Aranzubia to score.

Betis, who lost Fernandez to injury after the second goal, then extended their advantage further when Oliveira netted again.

He was unmarked in the centre to meet a pinpoint cross from Sanchez and the over-worked Aranzubia was picking the ball out of the net for a third time.

A one-sided encounter then gave the first indication that it could turn into a cracker when Bilbao pulled a goal back in the 31st minute.

A Yeste corner was met by Urzaiz, who powered his header beyond the dive of Antonio Doblas at the far post.

Just four minutes later, Bilbao grabbed their second with a carbon copy of the first - Yeste crossing for Urzaiz to head home to send the home side into the break facing a 3-2 deficit.

Betis' suspect set-piece defending was again exposed when, two minutes after the restart, Yeste sent in another corner that Gurpegi nodded beyond Doblas to level the scores.

At 3-3 it was game on and in the 69th minute, the hosts scored a fourth to take the lead for the first time in the extraordinary contest.

Tormentor-in-chief Yeste used the far-post run of Santiago Ezquerro as a decoy to rifle a fantastic shot past Doblas at his near post to send the home fans into raptures.

And just when things seemed they could not get any worse for a shellshocked Betis, they lost Lembo to a second yellow card for obstructing the ubiquitous Yeste.

But against the odds the 10 men roused themselves to stun the home crowd with an 80th-minute equaliser.

Oliveira took a pass from sub Benjamin Zarandona, turned his man in the penalty area and waltzed past Aranzubia to seal his hat-trick, and notch his 15th goal of the season.

There were no more goals but the 30,000 crowd had seen a memorable contest.

The point takes Bilbao above Deportivo into ninth place in the standings while Betis leapfrog Villarreal and remain in the European reckoning in sixth position
