10 is not a goalscorer ala Ian Rush, Diego Maradona was what johnny foreigner would call a "number 10" as is roberto baggio and Totti, this is what you thinka number 8 is. Cruyff was also a number 10. this is an attacking playmaker, who wants the ball all the time and makes things happen number 8, not sure what this. Rooney (who i think is a very similar player to Tevez) has the shirt number 8 - coincidence? maybe number 8 is like a creative striker, as opposed to a number 10 who is more of a creative midfielder / playmaker ? someone from south america or spain could probably this. One of the "inside-forwards" numbered either 8 or 10 dropped into a midfield position to join the remaining half back in central midfield; with the "Outside-right" (7) and the "Outside- left" (11) forming the new midfield.

This left the other "inside-forward" to join the traditional centre forward (9) in forming the strike force. The old W-M formation meant that each poistion had a unique name and number. However when half backs and inside forwards were redeployed into defensive, midfield and striking positions, the actual numbers worn by these players became less well defined.
