Dundee Utd
Last year: 9th
Ground: Tannadice
Capacity: 14,209
Manager: Gordon Chisholm
(5 months: W6, D2, L4) We say: 6th
THE TERRORS were among the favourites in last term’s
best of the rest market but rather than challenging
for third they ended the season scrapping for
survival.
Ian McCall couldn’t maintain the progress that
saw United improve from second-bottom to fifth in
his first season in charge and was replaced by
assistant boss Gordon Chisholm in March after a
dreadful run that left the Terrors bottom.
Chisholm did better over the rest of the season,
and in the remaining ten matches, the Tannadice club
earned six of their eight wins for the season and
more than half their final points tally, although
five of those were against their fellow strugglers
after the SPL split. Cat Derek Stillie has signed
from Dunfermline but otherwise it’s been pretty quiet
on the transfer front. The Dundee faithful will be
encouraged by the capture of striker Lee Miller, who
scored 11 goals in a loan spell with Hearts after an
unsuccessful move to England with Bristol City. In
order to become a useful outfit, United must address
their poor home form, having won fewer home games
than any other club last season, but late victories
over both Hibernian and Hearts show they are slowly
a team on the up.
Trinidad & Tobago forward Jason Scotland's
career looks to be taking a turn for the worst as he
was declined a work permit. This means that Scotland
cannot play for Utd or any other team in the SPL.
They might not pull up any trees, but expect to
see some improvement this season.
A bet on the outcome of the SPL at the start of the season
has become little more than a coin-toss (only with less
excitement) so I’d suggest keeping your money in your pocket
when considering Rangers or Celtic, other than to say that
Celtic look to have taken an almighty step backwards from
the days of the mighty Martin O’Neil in appointing Gordon
Strachan.
I don’t quite know who else would fit the bill but, as
astute as Strachan appears to be, initially at least, this
task looks beyond what we’ve seen so far.
